Duck Soup (1933)

The Marx Brothers’ 1933 film "Duck Soup" is the ultimate screwball comedy. Groucho Marx, sporting his traditional look of glasses and a large, painted-on black moustache, plays Rufus T. Firefly, the newly appointed ruler of Freedonia. The ambassador of Sylvania recruits two spies, Harpo and Chico Marx, to spy on Firefly so he can be discredited. However, through his clever, and insulting one-liners, Firefly incites the ambassador to war.

The chicanery of the Marx Brother’s drives this film through its thin plot. In many occasions the film makes little sense, but it really doesn’t matter because it still provides plenty of laughs.

Filled with clever, witty one-liners delivered by Groucho and slapstick comedy provided by Chico and Harpo, the film truly is a classic. The jokes have been imitated in every comic medium from cartoon to Woody Allen. The mirror scene, where Harpo pretends to be Groucho’s reflection, is quite possibly the most duplicated comedic sequence in all of film.

With the effect the Marx brothers have had on comedy it is no wonder this film, quite possibly their best, was named to the AFI’s Top 100 American Films. "Duck Soup" is a forever-shining comedic gem and will leave the viewer with a smile every time.
