Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

“Freddy Vs. Jason” is one of the best horror movie sequels ever made. Using two of the most popular and overused characters in movies (Jason Voorhees has been slaughtering teenagers in 9 films; Freddy Krueger in 7.), the director and writers managed to create a fresh and entertaining story.

The movie opens with a narration by Freddy, who has been effectively erased from the memory of the children of Springwood by a plan developed and enforced by their parents. He relates his past, with a few scenes of memorable deaths from his earlier films and explains his plot to use Jason to reestablish himself in the minds of Elm Street youth.

The killing of youths then ensues. Jason comes to Springwood and begins to kill indiscriminately. The fear begins to grow in the children, and Freddy begins to get stronger. Once Freddy reaches his former strength, however, he cannot stop Jason from killing. This puts them on a collision course, and sets up the final 30 minutes of the film. The final fight lives up to the carnage one would expect from these two characters with blood flying everywhere, but still does not reveal a definitive victor.

The acting is typical of the other films in the two series: overly dramatic scenes, cheesy puns and one-liners, random nudity, sexual innuendo, and a lack of real dramatic talent. The film, however, is still entertaining. The actors and director know the lines are cheesy and have fun with it. Nothing is taken too seriously, which adds to the enjoyment for the die-hard fan and the first-time watcher. More often than not, you will have a smile on your face during this film.

In creating this film and ending it the way they did, everyone involved has given new life to two horror movie franchises that were beginning to struggle. With the success of this film, and the rumors abounding about possible sequels, horror films have once again attained a popularity not seen since the ’80s.

And finally, a little side note to my thoughts on the film. After watching “Freddy vs. Jason”, I have come to three conclusions:

  • 1.) Neither Freddy nor Jason will ever win because they are both dead.

  • 2.) Drugs, beer and sex will lead you to a horrific death.

  • 3.) Never pick on the fat, ugly kid because you never know when he will die and be resurrected as an unstoppable, psychopathic killer.
