Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)

“Rambo: First Blood Part II” is one of the greatest action movies of all time. Not only does it have the usual dialogue and carnage obligatory to a great action flick, but it manages to incorporate themes from the horror and western genres as well.
Corny dialogue is a staple in this film, as it is in all action films. Lines such as, “What you call hell, he calls home,” are delivered with the utmost sincerity in the film, but it is precisely the sincerity that makes the lines so amusing. Even though the lines are somewhat corny, they lend themselves perfectly to shameful quoting. I’m still waiting for the opportune time to use the aforementioned line.
The best parts of the film come when Rambo decides to seek revenge on the soldiers who are responsible for the death of his love interest in manners befitting of a horror film. Not only does he manage to carry out his revenge in stealth, but he does it in creative and stylish fashions that would make Jason Voorhees envious. The climactic moment of this stalking rampage comes when he uses an explosive arrow to blow up a soldier. With body parts flying everywhere, one cannot help but think of a horror film.
One of the more appealing aspects of the film comes from his lone gunman mentality. He is recruited by the military for dangerous mission because he is the only man who can accomplish it. The scenario is reminiscent of the villagers asking the retired gunslinger to save the town, although Rambo was in jail when the military asked him and not sitting on a porch. His code name also reminds the audience of his solitary ways—he is the Lone Wolf. A fitting name for his character in the film, not only does he operate by himself, but he hunts the soldiers like a wolf might hunt its prey. At the end of the film, Rambo walks off into the sunset, solidifying his status as the lone warrior.
“Rambo” is a great film that has become a staple of pop culture in America. Overall, an entertaining film I would recommend to anyone in search of a good, action-filled time.
