Vampire Hunters (2002)

**1/2

Zombies and vampires are staples of the horror genre. Most entertaining horror films have one or the other. “Vampire Hunters” has both, and they are the same thing.

“Vampire Hunters” follows four warriors named after the elements they have mastered—Earth, Wind, Fire and Lightning. The four warriors and their master hunt vampires. However, the vampires they hunt are not like the suave aristocrats seen in “Dracula” or “Interview with the Vampire.” Instead, they are zombies who have fed on the living for too long and have become vampires.

Making the vampires former zombies gives the film a touch of originality, and it also adds humor. The vampires can fly, but they do not talk, and they do not use their arms. Throughout the movie, all of the vampires and zombies keep their arms by their sides, which is highly amusing later in the film when hundreds of zombies are jumping around with their arms stiffly by their sides. And, instead of using their teeth to draw blood from a victim, these vampires suck the blood out of their victims from a distance causing their bodies to explode.

The plot and acting are weak. Romantic story lines are introduced, but they are never really developed. The story lines just take away from the action of the film and make the film seem longer. Runtime is only 90 minutes, but while the plot unfolded, it felt more like 150 minutes. None of the actors or actresses in the film really gives a standout performance. Instead, it seems like they just want to say their lines and leave.

The action sequences, however, are immensely entertaining. “Hunters” combines elements of martial arts films with the campy special effects look of b-horror movies. The sword fights and choreography are excellent, although a bit reminiscent of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

“Vampire Hunters” cannot quite overcome its poor acting and plot, but with its blend of martial arts and horror movies, it is an entertaining film to watch at least once.
